The Remaining

Dir. Casey La Scala (2014)

A wedding is interrupted by apocalyptic events that threaten to end humanity on Earth.

CAUTION: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

A rare Christian horror movie that doesn’t totally suck, The Remaining answers the age-old question of how the hell someone can produce Donnie Darko, A Walk to Remember, and a sequel to The Amityville Horror in the same career while also directing a Left Behind knockoff. It’s not a great movie by any stretch, but there are some really well-done scenes and the actors are doing the absolute best they can to sell the shit out of the thing. Unfortunately, it feels more like a half-found-footage, half-The OC version of an end-of-the-world tale than it does a legitimate horror movie, which makes sense coming from the production company that also brought us Heaven is for Real and Kirk Cameron vehicle Fireproof. And if that doesn’t sell it for you, I don’t know what will.
